CHARLES MONTANA PORTFOLIO
GAME DESIGNER
Reality Shift
PROJECT TYPE
-
Game Design Senior Project - Capstone Project
-
First Person - Sci-Fi - Platformer
CAPSTONE DESCRIPTION
-
Reality Shift was the effort of me and my colleagues for our senior project at the end of our time at Full Sail. Being grouped together at random in our class, we were given a small insight on how teams come together in the industry. When you enter into a team, THAT is your team. You don't get to choose, it's about forming a relationship with everyone and learning the best way to work together.
-
The project wasn't given to us or decided upon the group but was originally a team members POC. The best POC's were chosen from the class to become full games. Going into this we all had games we wanted to make, but had to work together on a completely different vision.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
-
A first person, sci-fi platformer, Reality Shift puts you into the role of 'Bob', who's all about his smokes. After an unsuccessful attempt at getting a new pack, he finds himself transported onto a infinite train that holds new worlds within its cars.
-
The objective of the game is to travel through the cars to reach the conductor and return home with a new fresh pack of smokes. Each car introduces a new piece of equipment to traverse through the diverse worlds the player will encounter on the journey.

Challenges
in
Development
-
With an project of any scale there will be challenges and during the 6 month period in which we were given to complete the game, me and my team faced plenty. A reoccurring challenge for everyone was handling game development and class work which at some points would be directly involved with how we needed to develop our games. From unnecessary mechanics to timewasting roadblocks there was something impeding our work at any point.
-
Everyone has their mind blanking from time to time on how to approach certain aspects when it comes to design, but I had my own troubles tailored just for me. No game engine is a stranger to errors and bugs but I tend to find all of them in a single sitting. When creating our opening cinematic I was able to complete a full draft of it, but once done the map was left corrupted. I was unable to access the map entirely and could not replace any assets or improve my environment. From myself, classmates, instructors, to professors, no one could figure out what misfired in our project. Thankfully this didn't occur again.
